Unit 1: Communication

The Communication strand: Grade 8 learners engage in directed short conversations, ask and answer questions, discuss activities and interests with some detail, use the present tense frequently and past tenses occasionally, comprehend and extract information from texts, analyze media messages, recount events, read aloud and read for pleasure, create texts of 50-55 words, and represent and respond to creative works.

Unit 2: Culture

The Culture strand: Grade 8 learners recognize that Canada is officially bilingual, identify personal and francophone celebrations and customs, recognize the presence of francophone cultures in Canada and Saint Pierre et Miquelon, and identify the contributions of prominent francophones.

Unit 3: General Language Education

The General Language Education strand: Grade 8 learners build an explicit strategy toolkit - decoding with cues, predicting with contextual clues and organizers, gathering and organizing information, applying language patterns, using references, working from models, checking for errors, using the writing process, and using oral-presentation and print-text strategies. (These GLE statements spiral into Grade 9; each is pitched here to Grade 8's present/occasional-past, 50-55-word level.)
