Unit 1: Number

Big Idea: numbers to 100 represent quantities that can be decomposed into 10s and 1s, and personal strategies build computational fluency. Counting to 100, using friendly benchmark numbers, and adding and subtracting with growing confidence.

Big Idea: patterns can be found in many forms, including repeating and growing patterns. Finding the repeating core and noticing when a pattern grows bigger each time.

Big Idea: our number system describes change, equality, and inequality. Showing how an amount changed with pictures and symbols, and writing equal and not-equal using the = and ≠ signs.

Big Idea: objects and shapes have attributes that can be described, measured, and compared. Looking at many attributes of flat shapes and solid objects at once — sides, corners, and faces.

Big Idea: concrete graphs can be represented as pictorial graphs. Drawing what a graph of blocks would look like using pictures, and talking about how likely everyday events are.
