Our Most Accessible Update Yet: MapleMind in Any Browser, Free Every Day

Since version 1.0 launched, we've shipped a steady stream of updates without ever really announcing them — a full web app, a rebuilt free plan, verified parental consent, a redesigned experience end to end. This post is the announcement. It's also an honest explanation of the goal behind all of it: making sure that cost, device, and language stop deciding which Canadian students get help with their schoolwork.

What's in this update

This update makes MapleMind: AI Homework Tutor — a Canadian AI tutoring app for K-12 students (Grades 1–12, all 10 provinces) covering Math, Science, English, French, and Social Studies, with step-by-step homework help, adaptive practice, and provincial exam prep (EQAO, FSA, PAT) — available to more students, on more devices, more often. Here's the before and after:

Underneath those rows sits the work we never announced. MapleMind is faster now, and the AI streams its answers more steadily, without stalling partway through an explanation. You can paste a whole essay or a long assignment at once, up to 100,000 characters, and the tutor reads all of it instead of choking on the length. The onboarding flow is localized into all 14 languages, so a newcomer parent can set the account up in the language their family actually speaks. Math and diagrams render cleanly inside lessons, Pro is available directly in the browser, and the interface was redesigned across every screen. It's the work that makes the first five minutes feel simple for a nine-year-old and trustworthy for their parent.

Why free credits now reset daily

Free credits reset daily because learning is a daily habit, not a monthly event. Under the old model, a student who used their monthly credits in the first week waited weeks for more — exactly backwards from how studying actually works. Retrieval practice, streaks, and small consistent sessions are what move grades, and a free plan should work with that pattern instead of against it.

There's an access argument too, and it's the one we care most about. Private tutoring in Canada typically runs $20 to $80 an hour, which quietly sorts kids by what their family can afford. A free plan that renews every single day means a student with zero budget can still show up every afternoon, ask real questions about their actual curriculum, and take a practice quiz — indefinitely, at no cost. That's the tutoring access gap, addressed at the level of product design rather than promises. (See how the free plan compares to Pro.)

Why a web app matters for access

The web app matters because the students who most need tutoring support are the least likely to have their own device. An app-store app assumes a personal phone or tablet, storage space, and an app store account. A browser assumes almost nothing. As of this update, the full MapleMind experience — AI tutoring, homework help, practice, exam prep — runs free at app.trymaplemind.ca on:

• School Chromebooks — standard issue in many Canadian classrooms
• Library and community-centre computers — no installation, nothing left behind after logout
• Shared family laptops — one account per student, synced with the mobile apps
• Older hardware — anything that runs a modern browser

Digital equity in education is usually discussed as a hardware problem. Software choices matter just as much: every requirement a product drops — a download, a device, a credit card — widens who can actually use it. Dropping all three at once is why we call this our most accessible update yet.

How to start in under two minutes

No sales call, no demo booking, no download. The whole flow:

1. Open the web app. Go to app.trymaplemind.ca in any browser — a school Chromebook, a library computer, or a shared family laptop all work.
2. Create a free account. Sign up with an email address, or use Google or Apple sign-in. No credit card is required.
3. Pick your province and grade. MapleMind aligns lessons, practice, and exam prep to your provincial curriculum, from Grade 1 to Grade 12.
4. Start learning. Ask a homework question, start a topic lesson, or take a practice quiz. The free plan includes 5 AI tutoring chats and 1 practice quiz every day.

What didn't change: the guardrails

Making a product radically easier to access only helps if the safeguards travel with it, so none of them were loosened:

• Guided Mode is still the default and still locked. It teaches the concept and works through a different example instead of answering the assigned question, and turning it off requires the account password or Face ID — a student can't quietly disable it on their own. It's the reason teachers can allow MapleMind where they'd ban an answer engine. (More under how MapleMind works.)
• Verified parental consent for children under 13. This update rebuilt the entire consent flow: the parent is the account holder, consent is independently verified, and no AI feature unlocks without it — PIPEDA's standard for children's data, not a checkbox exercise.
• Built in Canada, PIPEDA-compliant. We don't sell ads and we don't sell data, and nothing about MapleMind is built to keep a student staring at a screen. The sooner a child gets the help they need and can get back to being a kid, the better the tool has done its job.
• 14 languages, including the tutor itself. The AI explains, teaches, and gives feedback in the language the student chooses — English, French, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, Tagalog, Punjabi, Urdu, Somali, Vietnamese, or Amharic. For newcomer families, that's often the difference between using the help and abandoning it.

The bigger picture

Safe AI tutoring is becoming public infrastructure, and the direction governments are taking matches the direction this update takes. The UK's AI Tutoring Pioneers Programme is building government-backed AI tutors for up to 450,000 disadvantaged pupils a year, explicitly to close the attainment gap, with safety standards written in and a national benchmark planned to test whether AI tutors deliver effective, safe, curriculum-aligned teaching. Estonia already gives its secondary students free AI learning tools through AI Leap. Canada's own AI for All strategy funds AI literacy and teacher training nationwide.

The consistent principles across all of these — tutoring for the students who can't afford it, curriculum alignment, safety standards up front, and AI that complements great teaching rather than replacing it — are the same principles MapleMind is built on. Canada doesn't yet have a public AI tutoring programme, so we've built the closest thing we can as an independent Canadian company: a curriculum-aligned AI tutor for all ten provinces with a free tier that renews daily. And when public benchmarks for AI tutoring quality and safety arrive — the UK's will assess the whole market, not just its own partners — we'd welcome being measured against them. That's a bar any serious AI tutor should want to clear.

For educators, school boards, and community organizations

The most direct route to the students this update is for runs through the people who already serve them. So, plainly:

• Teachers and school boards: we run free classroom pilots — locked Guided Mode, provincial curriculum alignment, and Canadian privacy compliance are the whole point of the product, and web access means it works on the Chromebooks you already have.
• Non-profits and community organizations working with newcomer or lower-income families: we provision free accounts for the students you serve — see our community pilots page and tell us who you're helping.
• People working in education policy or AI-in-education initiatives — in Canada or anywhere: we're an Edmonton-built company working on the safe, curriculum-aligned end of this technology, and we're glad to share what we're learning. The door is open.
